Why are virtual summits such a hot topic right now?
Summits are not going away. They kind of exploded during COVID, but the format of posting online is so much less intense than renting out a ballroom and their impact is still very, very powerful. They're not going away, the potential to earn a lot is not going away, and it's just fun to be a part of.
I think one thing that is important to consider is that summits are a really big deal. A summit is a funnel, it's a launch and it's also a live event. That's why they're so impactful, but they are a lot of work.
There is a huge need for support teams for summits. The potential there in that market is infinite. In fact, while I was running my first summit - literally had zero summits under my belt - I got like five people contacting me about wanting me to run their summit, including some of the speakers of the summit.
How does someone get started with producing summits?
I dove in and did literally all the things for that first summit. That wasn’t necessarily the best idea, but boy, did I learn really fast!
I had never built an E-comm WordPress site from scratch with Woo Commerce and a course platform and integrations. I bought this summit kit that had video tutorials for everything, literally everything and templates and all that stuff.
My husband said “If you buy that summit kit and you have this client that really wants you to do it, isn't it like getting paid to learn?"
You can also always farm out pieces. The further we got into the summit, there were just some things that are not my zone of genius. In fact, I came into your Facebook group, Sharon, and was like, “I need to hire a community manager!”
So the community manager handled the Facebook group and took over the inbox for me for three hours every morning, between my time of six to nine. And it let me actually have my coffee before I dove. It was totally my first experience hiring a team and that lit a little fire in me too, which I loved.
How to price your virtual summit services
There are two models:
1- 20% of Gross Sales
Some people charge a flat 20% of gross sales. If I had done that, I would have made almost double what I made from the summit. But I didn't, because I also didn't know if it was going to flop.
When you're brand new, I would not recommend doing a flat percentage because there's this scary factor of - what if the summit flops?
2 - Retainer Package
I created a retainer package. I said, “This is what I'm going to cover. These are the tasks that I'm going to do. And I very clearly outlined what I wasn't going to do. Like: I'm not going to go looking for speakers for you, I'm not going to handle your PayPal and your Stripe set up. There's some things that I clearly said I'm not going to do, but here's the 972 bullet points stuff that I am going to do.”
Then I created a flat rate and added two clauses that saved my life:
One was adding a commission on gross sales. I added a 2% sales commission, which is a little low. The usual is like three to seven.
The other thing I added is an “if work exceeds clause”, and this is something that Peggy Re James, who was my first VA coach told me. She just said, “Dama, you should do that because these things can be a really big deal.”
