If I could go back to the beginning of my business and change ONE thing, I would have chosen a specialty from day one instead of marketing myself as a “general” virtual assistant.

It would have saved me from years of bad clients, low rates, and feeling unfocused and uninspired by my business.

The truth is: it was only my mindset that was holding me back. I had so many doubts and fears based on the myths I believed about choosing a specialty.

On today’s episode of The Support Squad, I’m sharing 4 Toxic Myths About Choosing a Specialty for Your Business and debunking them once and for all!

If you want to feel empowered to choose a profitable specialty for your virtual business, even if you’re BRAND NEW to the online space, you need to listen to this episode.

Tune in to hear:

  • Why you don’t need years of experience in order to have a specialty
  • The myth that having a specialty will limit how many clients you can attract
  • How to use your specialty as a marketing tool, not as something that limits you
  • Why it’s totally okay to have more than one specialty...AFTER you’ve mastered the first

Myth #1 You have to have experience.

To get you to understand this one, I want to ask a question:  If a client asked you to do something that you didn't know how to do….what would you do?

If you're anything like me and most virtual assistants, you're probably super resourceful and would do everything you could to figure it out!

I remember at the beginning of building my business, a client that was paying me $15 an hour as a general virtual assistant asked me to help her launch her podcast.

I had never done it before, but my client asked me to do it so I looked up every step of launching a podcast and I helped her launch that podcast.

I'm willing to bet that you have the skills and the resourcefulness that it takes to figure out pretty much anything. Instead of taking a passive role in your business, by just doing whatever your clients ask you to do, why not choose a profitable specialty from Day 1?

Myth #2 A specialty will limit how many clients you can get.

People worry that if they have a specialty right off the bat, it's going to limit how many clients they're going to be able to get. They think that if they cast a wide net and offer every service under the sun, that they'll be able to find more clients.

If you are a general virtual assistant and you offer a billion different services, what clients are going to see is a person that can “kind of” do a lot of different things. They don't know what makes YOU stand out from other virtual assistants.

Because they don't know what your real skills are, they are either going to (1) try to hire you for a very low rate because they figure you're just another general all-purpose virtual assistant, or (2) they're going to pass you over to find someone that's a little more high quality.

Myth #3 You can only offer that one service.

We don't niche down or choose a specialty in order to limit us in our business. A specialty is a marketing tool that we use to attract high-quality clients.

For example, I'm a podcast manager. That attracts high-quality clients that are looking for a certain caliber of talent and expertise.

They know I'm an expert in podcasting,  but as soon as I get on a discovery call with any client, they always ask “What else do you do?”

Your specialty is a spotlight that you put on yourself to be able to say “I'm really good at this one thing,” but once you reel someone in, you can let them know all of the other services that you can provide.

Myth #4 You can only have one specialty.

I know you’re probably a multitalented entrepreneur who is interested in lots of different things. Maybe you’re torn between specializing in Pinterest Management and Dubsado Setup.

Secret: It doesn't really matter which one you choose. I want you to choose one, claim it out loud, and make it your focus for six months or so.

Then after you've established yourself as an expert in one specialty, you can always add on something else. It’s all about having clarity and focus in your market so that you stand out from all the other service providers out there.
